Appraisal

Measure the performance of your employees. Conduct an employee appraisal to know how well they are performing.

You cannot evaluate the performance of an employee unless you provide him first with the criteria he will be evaluated upon. You must start first by giving your employee clear objectives and clear directions. You must tell him how exactly he will be evaluated in clear measurable points before he starts working. Failing to do so will result in confusion on the side of the employee and will lead to poor results at the end and unsatisfactory performance.

You may also consider using an employee scorecard to keep track of daily performance of your employee. This might help in conducting the appraisal at the end of the probation period or at the end of the year. The important point is to measure the performance of the employee against the objectives and criteria set forth before he starts work and made clear to him.

An appraisal can be used to determine whether or not an employee will continue work at a company after a probation period. An appraisal could also be used to evaluate employees at the end of the year. It is important to tie the results of this appraisal to a reward system, be it financial reward, moral reward or both. An appraisal system should be closely tied with the promotion scheme of employees and how they can advance up the ladder of their organization.
